Lazy S'S Farm Nursery - Rare and New or Time Tested Classic?

(Use your Browser's Back Button to return to the previous page when you're finished.).

We have, quite honestly, a stupendous selection of Plants!

Over the course of the entire season somewhere near 2000 Varieties and Species.  Many of those are the Rare and Unusual or Rare and New.   (Oh yeh, we're plant junkies too - so we definitely have those!)   BUT the Backbone of the Perennial Border will always be the Time Tested Classics.  And there's a reason -- they've stood the test of time.  They've proven themselves across the country, in varying conditions.  It amazes us how few Online Sources offer these plants -- dropping them in favor of whatever's hot that year.  The Perennial Plants of the Year and the absolute 'Must Haves', like Echinacea purpurea 'Whatever Your Choice of Cultivar', Rudbeckias, Asters, Chrysanthemums, etc. -- these hard working, great performers are dropped in favor of whatever is Newer or More Rare (but not always better.)  It's like Reverse Discrimination!

We protest in their behalf!  They may not be the hottest, the newest and and often, not the most expensive -- BUT they've stood the test of time!

Nothing Rare and New should ever nudge these Time Tested Classics from the shelf!  (Leucanthemum 'Becky, Rubeckia 'Herbstonne' and 'Goldstrum' and Verbena bonariensis.)

Rare, Unusual & New or Tried & True Perennials

Equally gorgeous and dependable, Echinacea purpurea 'Magnus' and Agastache x 'Blue Fortune'.  (Although I must admit, that I'm worried in behalf of Echinacea 'Magnus' because... (see right>>>)

Rare, Unusual & New or Tried & True Perennials

Occasionally, we luck out and the hottest New plants are instantly Time Tested by virtue of their parentage:  In this case, the hot new Echinaceas:  Fragrant Angel, Sundown, Razamatazz, Orange Meadowbrite, Mango Meadowbrite and Sunset.  Yum!

The Newest Echinaceas in the Trade

Now, least you misunderstand, we don't keep propagating every plant we've ever owned when an improved and proven replacement comes along.  Sadly, in '07, we bid a fond farewell to one of the all time greats - Echinacea 'White Swan' -- we simply couldn't justify keeping it when 'Fragrant Angel' is a look alike, stellar, dependable performer and FRAGRANT.    We don't just sell Perennials, like most online sources.   The fact is, we grow the plants we sell and then we put them in our gardens to see if what 'they' say is true.  Is it Better or is just Newer?  Obviously, we have to allow for our high summer temperatures, high humidity, terrible clay soil, etc. and do grow things for other parts of the country that we simply can't grow 'well' in our gardens but can grow successfully for a year in pots.  Some Time Tested Dianthus and Yarrows are like that.  They are Time Tested Classics across most of the country but just aren't great here.

You've probably figured out by now that we're the Champions of the Timex Plants - the ones that "Take a Lickin' and Keep on Ticken'"  We believe that a garden needs them both -- the New Stars, with the excitement, the challenge, the joy of growing the most 'Rare and New, Stop-You-In-Your-Tracks-Perennials' you can find but with a Supporting Cast of those Perennials that have always held the best gardens together -- the Time Tested Perennials that have proven themselves to be truly Garden Worthy.

So indulge yourself -- buy that new, can't live without, latest greatest Perennial but don't forget those plants that have been holding great gardens together for decades -- the Time Tested Classics.

Happy Gardening,

Debby & Pete Sheuchenko
