Plants
selected for this award meet very high standards:
Hardy
in Zone 7-8, be vigorous and easy to grow by a gardener of average
means and experience, be reasonably disease and pest resistant, have
a long season or preferably multiple seasons of interest, be
available from at least two retail sources in Canada and the US, be
adaptable to a variety of soil and fertility conditions, not require
excessive moisture, not be invasive or overly vigorous in colonizing
the garden or larger environment. Perennials should not
require staking, continual deadheading or frequent division.
Trees and shrubs should require little pruning and minimal training
to achieve their best form (excluding plants used for hedges).
Bulbs should persist in the garden, without being lifted, for at
least three years. Variegated plants should be stable and not
revert.

of the plants chosen for display at the Kemper Center for Home Gardening are not well
known to the residential gardener and homeowner, but should be acknowledged for
their outstanding qualities and dependable performance. These plants have been
singled out as Plants of Merit by Missouri Botanical Garden.
 The
GreatPlants® program is a joint effort of the Nebraska
Nursery & Landscape Association and the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum
that selects and promotes exceptional plants – reliably hardy, easy to
care for, and ornamentally worthwhile – for Plants of the Year and for
