Several years ago, New World Asters were
reclassified and renamed Symphyotrichum and in one case Eurybia. We dragged our feet
for awhile but will finally put them on their own page for 2009.
Poor Aster divaricatus even got excommunicated from this new group
and is off all alone as an Eurybia divaricata! |
|
|
|
Aster divaricatus and the cultivar A.
divaricatus 'Eastern Star' are classified as
Eurybia
divaricatus and are now on the

Deer Resistance and Asters. Well, it's a controversy.
They never bother our Native Asters in our high deer population
area, many reputable sources on the Internet say they're deer
resistant and then occasionally I find a site that says they're not.
If it's important to you, try to do some more research and how deer
respond to Aster's in YOUR AREA -- that often is the difference.

What you're saying about us...
|
"My plants arrived this morning. A few leaves
had fallen off some of the plants, but considering that they
traveled across country, they are in very good condition. Frankly, I
can't see how you, (or anyone) could possibly do a better job of
shipping live plants, in pots, than what you're doing. Thanks."

Symphyotrichums/Asters and the Color Blue.
Recently a customer wrote me about the color blue in Asters - she
doesn't like pinks and lavenders. I've looked at all of ours
and despite reports that this one or that one is blue, I
think you have to consider that the species colors of many Asters is
purple and to get a true, clear blue (I think) is hard (impossible?). To my
old eyes, there's always a hint of violet or lavender.
Yes, compared to the species, many are 'more blue', or 'closer to
blue' -- when breeders are working for blue -- but they're not true blue,
like you see in Salvia azurea or Salvia uliganosa or
some Campanulas or Nepetas or Caryopteris.

blooming VERY late, one of the latest in Fall which makes it all the

foliage when in bloom. The name? Supposedly the sky is
deeper blue in October than any other month! This plants

Symphyotrichum x 'Lalla' Hybrid
Stoloniferous Aster Zone: 4-8 probably

maybe
An
unbelievable amazing new introduction from Lazy S'S Farm via our
friend Jeana Prewitt. (Phlox 'Jeana'.) It was a passalong
plant from her friend and of unknown parentage. A
stoloniferous Aster with stolons right below the soil (not deep and
brittle like Monardas) and it's easy to pull up when it reaches the
edge of where you want it. But we want it everywhere!
And oddly, there's the occasional white bloom popping up among the
lavenders! In a good spot, it's around 18" tall in bloom
-- a little more in well watered spots and a little less in dry, but
in any spot, best if cut back 1/3 in June. In Jeana's words,
"A hardy survivor without being a pest!" Well lots of us could
use a gorgeous plant that fits that description. And voles
don't bother it! As our grandbaby would say, 'Hody Mody'
(That's Holy Moly for those that don't speak '2 year old talk'.)
Soil:
Most any but standing wet, even clay is OK
