Hylotelephium (formerly Sedum spectabile, Sedum telephium) are still listed that way below.  Taxonomists said this was the new name about 10 years ago! but very few people have made the switch.  We'll do so when most of the public can remember this name.

Sedum album 'Coral Carpet'     Coral Sedum Zone 3-9
Sedum album 'Coral Carpet'Coral Carpet (as in Coral Reef) is a low, spreading cultivar that quickly forms dense mats of fleshy, bright-green leaves, often tinged salmon pink. Clusters of starry white to pale pink flowers like Baby's Breath. This plants roots where it touches, so a little soon goes a long way. An excellent ground cover for a sunny, dry spot.
Soil: Well-drained     H:3-6"  W:  Indef.         B/M: White/6-7

$7.99 Qt.

Sedum bithynicum     Turkish Sedum     Zone:

Sedum bithynicumOne of our tiniest sedums. But don't let that fool you. This little guy can grow like a little weed!  But it's so tiny, it won't run over it's neighbors unless they're also VERY tiny.  Beautiful under conifers if they're limbed up 3 feet or so, so some sunlight can get in, where most things won't grow.  With some sun, this little guy will grow anywhere but a wet spot..

Soil: Well-drained     H: 1" W: Indef.      B/M:

"The plants arrived yesterday in absolutely fantastic shape!  Great packing job-I don't think they even realized they had taken a trip.  These are by far the nicest looking plants I have ever received by mail.  Keep up the good work-I really appreciate a company that actually cares about the stock they send.  Looking forward to doing business with you in the future!"         Thanks

Sedum hispanicum minus     Little Blue Spanish Stonecrop, Tiny Buttons    Zone: 5-9

A wonderful little sedum with blue-green succulent leaves and a soft feathery feel to it.  This European native is a great rockery plant and not a thug which some creeping sedums are.  More mound forming actually although it can spread if happy.  The species has white to pale pink blooms whereas this form is distinctly pink.  Great in troughs although not quite as hardy as some Sedums.

Soil: Well-drained    H:1-2"   W: Indef.      B/M:  Pink/June

Sedum lineare 'Golden Teardrop'    Sedum, Golden Teardrop      Zone: 4-9

Spreading, mat-forming plant with golden leaves. Outstanding groundcover. This is a really gorgeous sedum.  Aggressive spreader, even with neglect. Ours grows in fairly deep shade, which seems to control it even though it's not supposed to take shade! So much for books versus experience.

Soil: Well-drained     H: 2-4" W: Indef.    B/M: Yellow/5-6

$7.99 Qt.

Sedum lineare 'Variegatum'    Variegated Sedum     Zone: 4-9

Sedum makinoi 'Ogon'    Golden Makino or Japanese Stonecrop   Zone:  6-9

Far and away the most yellow of all the sedums.  Looks like little golden/chartreuse pebbles. Ogon means gold in Japanese.  Yellow blooms with orange tips to the stamens which are attractive and fluffy looking.  Not as hardy as some Sedums but for those who can grow it, it's a charmer.  Takes heat well and looks good all summer.  Unlike some sedums, it also seems to prefer a little shade in warmer climates.

Soil: Well-drained     H: 2" W:12"    B/M:   Yellow w/ orange tips to the stamens/5-6

$7.99 Qt.

Sedum makinoi 'Variegata'    Variegated Japanese Stonecrop          Zone: 6-9

A relative of famed golden 'Ogon' but with green and white foliage instead of gold.  Mint green round succulent foliage with creamy borders topped by yellow green blooms in August.  Makes a dense groundcover and beautiful spilling out of troughs or over walls in warmer areas.  Not as hardy as some sedums in this variegated form.

Soil: Well-drained        H:1-3"    W: 3-12"      B/M: Yellow green/August

$7.99 Qt.

Sedum platycladus     Sedum pachyclados     SunLight Shade   Zone: 5-9

Sedum platyclaudus literally hugs the ground (or anything else it encounters). The minute green leaves look like decals pasted on the soil. It forms a very dense, attractive cover.   Forms rosettes of fleshy gray-blue foliage and pale yellow flowers in summer.  Actually likes regular water unlike some.  Slow grower.

Soil: Well-drained      H: 4"    W:15"           B/M: Yellow

$8.99 Qt.

Sedum 'Purple Emperor'   Hylotelephium 'Purple Emperor'   SunLight ShadePart Shade     Zone: 3-7

Touted as the replacement for burgundy Sedum 'Mohrchen' because it retains it's upright posture throughout the season.  The fleshy, dark purple leaves and stems lay the foundation for masses of tiny, star-lie, dusky pinkish-purple bloom in large, flattened flower heads, 3-6" across.  Like all of the 'tall' Sedums, wonderful even in winter.  Introduced by Washfield Nursery in England, it has the darkest black burgundy of any sedum and will surely take the Sedum world by storm.

Soil: Well-drained     H: 12-18" W: 12-18"     B/M: Dusky Pinkish Purple/7-9

$7.99 Qt.

Sedum rupestre 'Sea Gold'      Golden Blue Spruce Sedum          Zone: 5-8

Like it's cousin, S. rupestre, it looks like a little succulent, evergreen forest, only in this case, the foliage is gold.  Strong grower and good groundcover.  Spikey golden foliage to 3/4" long.  In cold climates, often turns reddish-orange in autumn.  Star-shaped 1/2" wide blooms over a long time in summer.

Sedum sexangulare 'Watch Chain'        Sedum Watch Chain       Zone: 3-9

Soil: Well-drained     H: 2-3" W: Indef.      B/M: Yellow/6-7

Sedum sieboldiis -- Clump forming sedums

Some of the best Sedums in the trade.  Clump forming with absolutely Amazing Fall colors as you can see at the left!  In Fall, due to the heavy stems, the plants may need to be cut back some for shipment.  Tough plants, but in the ground, they rest on the soil or mulch which supports their unusually large, heavy blooms.  If we try to ship when in bloom, and if the box gets banged or turned upside down, these heavily laden stems can snap (and always right at soil level).  So for the safety of your plants, we may have to cut them back some so we can secure them for travel.  Early in the season, this isn't a problem.

$7.99 Qt.

Sedum sieboldii  'Blue Form'     Blue October Daphne    Zone: 3-8

Sedum spectabile or now, Sedum telephium - Upright Sedums

  Sedum spurium - Groundcover Sedums

Sedum spurium cultivars are some of the best groundcover sedums HOWEVER, THEY ARE OFTEN SPARSE LOOKING THE FIRST YEAR, filling in thickly in later years  With foliage that ranges from green (John Creech) to burgundy red (Coccineum), red orange (Fuldaglut) to three colored (Tricolor), there's a color for every garden.  And now we have the darkest and most sinister of all (or at least from its name -- Voodoo)! Semi-evergreen foliage.  Plant 12" apart for groundcovers.

$7.99 Qt.

Sedum spurium 'Fuldaglut'    Groundcover Sedum     Zone: 3-9

Red orange foliage. Red flowers in July. Good ground cover. This creeper has lustrous, semi-evergreen foliage w/ a deep-red edge and burgundy flowers in early to midsummer. It spreads rapidly but not invasively. Wherever its lax stems touch soil, they put down roots.

Sedum 'Beka' PP18398    (Autumn Delight'TM)  Variegated Stonecrop   Z: 4-9

In our opinion, Sedum 'Autumn Joy' is not only one of the best Sedums in the trade but one of the best Perennials -- period!  We couldn't think of any way to improve on it but, well, gosh, now there's a STABLE variegated form of 'Autumn Joy' (via intermediate sport 'Autumn Charm' TM).  Oh wow!  Chartreuse-yellow leaves with a narrow, blue-green margin.  The large clusters of pink flowers on sturdy upright stems coordinate perfectly and generally completely cover the entire top of the foliage -- just like Grandma 'Autumn Joy'.  Gradually, the seed heads change to bronze and add winter interest.

Soil: Well-drained          H: 18-36"   W: 24"           B/M: Vibrant Pink/Fall

Please note, due to the marvelous 'reclining' nature of the following two sedums -- long stems with huge HEAVY blooms at the end, late in the season, we will probably have to cut the plants back some to ship.  They're wonderful planted in the garden where the earth or mulch supports these heavily laden stems but traveling in a quart pot, if the box gets slammed about or turned upside down, the heavy stems can break (and always right at the crown), so for the protection and safety of your plant, we will cut them back to a safe length for travel.

$7.99 Qt.

Sedum x cauticola Bertram Anderson   Zone: 3-9

Often listed as a cultivar of Sedum cauticola, it's actually a hybrid with S. cauticola as one parent.  Very cold hardy with rounded,  blue violet foliage on cascading purplish stems, and deep rose flowers in the autumn.
Compact and sprawling (in the nicest sense), the foliage is a cool dusty lilac with an overall effect of smoky blue with rose-pink blooms in September and October.

Soil: Well-drained     H: 6-9"  W:    B/M:  Deep rose/9-10

Sedum x cauticola 'Vera Jameson'     Zone: 3-9

Marvelous English hybrid with bluish green leaves which turn DEEP PURPLE in the Fall on arching stems & with dusty pink flowers. With less sun, it won't reach the deep purple color but is grey-green tinged w/ pink. Gracefully reclines rather than upright. This is a superb sedum, in a color class all of it's own.

Soil: Well-drained     H:9-12"    W: 9-12"     B/M:  Dusty Pink/9-10

Sedum x telephium 'Carl'  (Hylotelephium)      Zone: 3-9

Touted as another improved version of Sedum 'Autumn Joy'.  Gees - this drives us nuts!  We're sure there can be no improvement on that plant - it's near perfection!  HOWEVER, there can be plants that are equally wonderful BUT differen than 'Autumn Joy'.  Such is 'Carl'.  With a similar sturdy disposition and other wonderful qualitites of Sedum 'A.J.',  'Carl' has outstanding, eye-catching bright pink-red blooms.  It's a matter of color - which works better in your Fall garden scheme!

Soil: Well-drained      H:18-24"  W:24"       B/M: Bright Pink Red/9-10

Sedum x 'Thundercloud' PPAF       Mounding Compact Stonecrop           Zone: 3-9

1/19/09 - So new, we appear to be the first to offer it online according to our Google Search.  And this is going to be a winner. An Intrinsic Perennial Gardens Introduction, it has unique pointed grey green foliage which emerges in spring on strongly mounding domes. It slowly expands to 10-12" mounds with white Sedum spectabile (Autumn Joy/Matrona) type flowers near the end of August into September.  We've never seen a true MOUNDING SEDUM in this height range and can just imagine the possibilities!  Intrinsic has been working for sometime for tight, sturdy compact Sedums and it sure likes they've done it!

Sempervivum - Hens 'n Chicks   Zone: 3-9(10)     (some afternoon shade in warmer areas)

Have very little need for soil or water. Most flower infrequently. Flowering rosette dies after setting seed but leaves lots of babies. True alpine plants. In Sempervivum the flowers are star-shaped with 8 to 16 petals. The most common colors are shades of pink or red although some have cream or yellow flowers. Grown in 3.5" pots 'cause all you really need is a 'Start' with these little multipliers!  There are about 60 species of Sempervivums and there are over 3600 registered cultivars!  I would say of all the Genuses of plants we've grown/studied/looked at, the reported zones on this Genus is the most confused.  If you query 30 sites, you'll find 30 different reports. Zone: 3-8, 4-7, 7-10.  :-)  After much study and deliberation, we honestly believe they're hardy almost everywhere!  AS LONG AS DRAINAGE IS IMPECCABLE there are many reports of them growing fine in Alaska.  I'd be interested to hear from Zone 10 gardeners.  I read mixed reports from Zone 10 gardeners, but again, think it's probably a "too much water issue".

Soil:  Very well-drained  Height varies but all are only inches tall.

Sempervivum (Jovibarba) allionii 'Monica'      Rollers    Zone: 3-9

We acquired this Jovibarba many years ago and thought it was a Sempervivum until just recently - March '06.  We did finally figure out (duh) that it's a Jovibarba allionii but really can't find a named cultivar that matches it, although possibly Jovibara 'Sibyllina'.  A single plant looks for all the world like an Artichoke!  And in winter, when all the Semps are grey and burgundy, it stands out in the crowd with an intensely apple green color.  Some sources list them as Sempervivums so we just leave them in with the Semps with both names so people can find them!

Soil: Well-drained     H: 3" W: Indef.    B/M: Pinkish/ 7-8

Sempervivum (Jovibarba) soboliferra 'Madame Lorene'    Rollers     Zone: 3-9

Introduced by Leo Thomas of the US.  Called 'Rollers' because the round babies roll away from the Momma. Some sources list them as Sempervivums (Sunny Border for one) so we just leave them in with the Semps with both names so people can find them!  Jovibarba flowers are yellow, more bell-like and usually have six petals.
