Symplocarpus foetidus  -  Skunk Cabbage
Symplocarpus foetidus - Skunk Cabbage Symplocarpus foetidus - Skunk Cabbage Symplocarpus foetidus - Skunk Cabbage
A large and small bloom bloom just emerging from the muddy shallow water of our bog.  The plant generates enough heat around it to thaw the soil so it can emerge! Another group in the same bog, but farther upland -- about 2-3 inches above the water level although their roots are in boggy, water logged mud. We're so fortunate to have a natural spring fed bog on our property -- about 50 feet from our shade greenhouse!  White lines upper right and lower left point to patches of Skunk Cabbage emerging and the other lines point to green foliage of Lobelia cardinalis.

Did you know?

Red Trillium - Trillium erectum and  Eastern Skunk Cabbage, Symplocarpus foetidus are pollinated by flies!  I'm happy to know this because I couldn't image any good use for flies!
