Nepetas
- The Fabulous
Catmints - Indestructible Blooming Machines!
If you think of Nepetas as
'Just Herbs', better think
again. They ARE herbs, useful in teas, etc. and one is the
true catnip. BUT they are also, given some sun and decent
drainage, indestructible blooming machines. Beautiful
(usually) blue blooms for months on end, soft blue green foliage and an
agreeable disposition. Like many pungent herbs, they are not
only deer resistant but help protect plants around them as their
scent perfumes the air to confuse the deer's sense of smell.. So
take a look -- they're superb perennials -- and your sunny garden
should have more than one! |

Nepeta longipes Lilac
Catmint in
cool areas
Zone: 3-8
Another
rare, hard to find Nepeta noted for the LILAC color blooms (most are
blue to violet). Gray green leave on purplish stems are highly
aromatic when brushed making deer avoid them. The two-lipped,
1/2" long aromatic lilac blooms are clustered in branching
spikes from May thru July. Shear after bloom for another Fall
bloom. The RHS suggests that this is probably a hybrid
involving N. multibracteata. Best in some shade in areas
with hot, humid summers.

Catmint, Mussin's Catmint

This
is a gorgeous, long-blooming plant. Medium lavender blue
blooms with darker sepals over felty, gray-green leaves. This
is a Timex Plant: takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'.
We love Catmints no, it's not anything like a real mint, except
that it has the square stem of the Mint family. We wouldn't
design a garden without several Nepetas and this is one of the best.

occasionally white. It has an upright habit. grey-green
leaves, bearing particularly attractive blooms that are useful for
cutting due to the upright nature of the blooms. This is a

What you're saying about us...

"Thank
you Deb for my Montauk Daisy plants!!! They arrived yesterday
in great condition. I planted them last evening and tucked
them in with a hug and a kiss! I am so excited to have these
plants. I have been searching for them for several years after
admiring my mom's spectacular plant in Connecticut. I am
hoping they will love living in Illinois. If you have any
special hints to make them flourish, I am very receptive!!
Thanks again for the love and attention you put into your work.
It shows!"

FYI
My 'special hint' was something to the effect, "Plant them in
well-drained soil then walk away and tend to something
fussy!" I love this dependable

Nepeta
'Walker's Low' Catmint Zone:

We treasure catmints because they cover ground so quickly w/ tidy foliage & willing blossoms. From England, 'Walker's Low' is
particularly easy to establish, enduring droughts and beating from the sun. From June on, its small silver leaves on arching stems
which bristle with blooms. A great
mound of foliage and bloom throughout the season. (Note:
Many folks think 'Walker's Low' is "Low" in height but it's actually
named after a place in England. If you want a truly 'low'

Strong
stems with very large brilliant lavender blue flowers with spotted
petals that blooms for months, reportedly May thru September with
large Dragonhead blooms. Tends to self-seed and run a bit so it's
not for small garden but a blooming wonder in a tough spot that
needs a big bold plant. Cutting back after blooming stops the
seeding and gives you a repeat bloom so doing that's a no-brainer!

Nerine angustifolia
Ribbon Leaved Guernsey
Lily, Cape Flower
Zone: 9-10

A
seldom seen species with leaves to 12" long which appear with or
just after the blooms which are held above the leaves, are a soft
shell pink with wavy margins in the upper half of each petal and
recurved tips. Generally bloom spikes have 6-10 flowers on a
mature bulb. This is a fall blooming species in South Africa
and Saziland. It's easy of culture and flowers dependably.
Hardy only in the deep South or South West, the rest of us must
enjoy it in pots brought in for winter (where it's generally
evergreen) but it's easy in GOOD potting soil as well. In
nature, even in warm zones, it's often dormant in the off season but
does need some moisture even in the off season. Found in acid
wetland marshes.

Nerine undulata Guernsey
Lily, Cape Flower
Zone: 9-10

A
summer growing species native to South Africa, Nerine undulata,
one of the best of the Genus, occurs on steep slopes in partial
shade. For most of us, their zone means pots culture but
they're easy and almost evergreen, just a short period of dormancy
where the leaves yellow then are almost immediately replaced.
Soft pink, crinkled, spider-like flowers are produced with
exuberance. Bloom production is matched by bulb production
which means you'll quickly have enough to see the blooms in mass
which is when they're at their best. They multiply
profusely! You can also grow
them outdoors anywhere and lift them for dry storage in the Fall as
you would any tender bulb. Dappled shade is best.

We
offer the TRUE

in early summer from waxy red
buds on creeping, semi-evergreen rosettes of shiny leaves. Good
spreader but still a more compact form than the species and neater
in habit (in a genus that does have some unruly relatives!) In
a large garden, a grouping of 3-5 creates a focal point of its 'can't be missed' color. In the smaller garden, even one can

Italian cooking. Easily grown in average, dry to medium well drained

pinkish purple blooms in terminal spikes. Best if sheared after
blooming to encourage the growth of fresh new leaves. Appreciates

for cooking, it's a wonderful golden foliaged plant for the border.

Oxalis grifithii
'Double Pink' Japanese Shamrock. Wood Sorrel
Zone: 6-9
Japanese
woodland Oxalis with green, rough-textured leaves and up-facing
fully double pink flowers. Easy in woodsy soil in moist shade. This
is a outstanding Oxalis selection from Japan. It makes small tidy
clumps with short rhizomes and in this rare selection, beautiful
double pink flowers. Expensive because it's a rare double but it's
not a fussy, hard to grow expensive plant! The first year or two,
they often have 'immature' single blooms. Don't panic -- they're
just getting settled in, working on roots, etc. Then they'll stun
you with the double blooms.
