Many of our Helleborus foetidus
have maroon 'lips' to the bloom. The above plant (center &
left) grows in full sun until about 2 in the afternoon under the drip
line of a 45 year old 12' tall 'Dwarf' Alberta Spruce which is limbed
up. It has been a deadly spot for almost everything we have
planted there. The Hellebore planted itself there (probably with
the help of cat paws) and is stunning in a spot so dry that behind it
and to the right is an Agave! Now this is what we're talking
about when we say a 'Timex' plant -- takes a lickin'..... Photo
on right shows H. foetidus as an evergreen 'groundcover' in dry shade.
