Fallopia japonica 'Variegata' Japanese Fleece
Flower Zone: 4-8
Whether
you call it Fallopia, because you're hip on up on the new names or
Polygonum or Persicaria, some of the older names, it doesn't matter
because it's a winner! In a Genus with some real Garden Thugs,
this is a well-behaved plant. It does spread a little but has
no interest in world domination, like some of it's close cousins -
even the green-leaved species from which it evolves. New
shoots emerge salmon pink in the spring. As the plant grows,
the rounded leaves become green with wide irregular white
variegation, but still tinted with pink. In late summer, small
creamy white flower spikes appear. This brightly colored plant can
definitely brighten up a moderately shaded area.
Branches are beautiful in flower arrangements.

Fallopia
japonica var. 'Compacta'
Polygonum 'Reynoutria', Dwarf Japanese
Knotweed Z:
4-8
This
plant has had more names than one can count - Polygonum, Reynoutria
to name two. The species is a noxious weed. The form 'Compacta',
according to the Missouri Botanical Garden Kemper Center website,
which says "Generally best as a ground cover in areas where its
somewhat invasive spread will not be a problem. Good for
massing on banks and slopes." Also, great in pots where it
can't spread at all! It's cold hardy enough to live year round
in pots in most parts of the country. Loose clusters of pale
pink flowers in summer mature to red and are followed by red seeds.
Heart-shaped (to 2" long), red-veined, green leaves turn red in
fall. Good Fall color. Soil:
Most any. H:

Farfugium japonicum 'Aureomaculata' Leopard
Plant
Zone: 7-10
The foliage of this tropical looking
plant from China and Japan is astounding with gold spots on green
shiny leaves but I think the most interesting part are the gold
daisy/Ligularia like blooms. Well not so odd since it's old
Botanical name was Ligularia
tussilaginea . I can't decide if I like it or not but if you don't,
just don't let it bloom! It is, after all, primarily a foliage
plant.

very short form of one of our favorite, underused perennials. A

the other forms are too tall. Needs at least average moisture in
sun. New to the trade. From China, Russia & Japan.

perennial forming large clumps in moist soil. Deeply cut,

that is valued for both its leaves and its flowers. In early & midsummer, branching red stems bear crowded
